What is Trigger Point Therapy?

Before we can answer the question “What is Trigger Point Therapy?” We should perhaps explain what a trigger point actually is. Generally it is agreed that trigger points or myofascial trigger points are quite simply muscle knots, which are small areas of tight muscle. These knots cut off their own blood supply which irritates them even more, and a collection of too many trigger points is called myofascial pain syndrome or MPS. The painful point can be felt as a nodule or band in the muscle and a twitch response can be induced on stimulation of the trigger point. When a muscle is injured or overworked, these trigger points can develop and then pain radiates out from the points into the muscle itself.

Trigger Point Therapy is not a miracle cure for all muscle pain although it is generally under rated and certainly helps. A little self-treatment has the potential to quickly, cheaply and safely help with many common pain problems that don’t respond well to any other treatment.

Trigger Point Therapy is specifically designed to alleviate the source of the pain through cycles of isolated pressure and release. This therapy can be in the form of your therapists’ fingers and thumbs where he (she) will apply pressure and movement to the knots in order to release the tension and therefore the pain. Or on the other hand you can use a one or more of a wide variety of home use products available from PhysioSupplies to mimic those fingers in action.
