Sensory Processing Disorder – How we can help

For those unfamiliar with this neurological condition, Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) is not uncommon. It affects 1 in 20 children, and even affects adults. It can also be common to find patients with Autism experiencing  SPD. Individuals with SPD might misinterpret sensory information such as sound, movement and touch to a point where every day function is completely impaired; whereas others may simply experience unusual behaviours or trouble with socialising, regulating emotions or their self-esteem.

The disorder is basically a miscommunication between what the patient may be experiencing, and how the brain processes the information, and the intensity and characteristics of symptoms can vary between individuals.

Patients may be HYPERsensitive, or HYPOsensitive and may experience difficulty in one or all modalities.

Examples of Hypersensitivity range from a dislike of being touched gently or other, unable to tolerate normal lighting in a room, irritability with specific clothing or tags, or have trouble maintaining eye contact.

A hyposensitive individual may take excessive risks, may be unable to calm down, restless or seek sensory stimulation.
