Pilates
Born near Dusseldorf, in 1880, Joseph H. Pilates had health problems as a child, suffering from asthma, rickets and rheumatic fever. It was his determination to beat these ailments that led to his study of both Eastern and Western forms of exercise, including yoga and ancient Greek and Roman exercise routines.
Pilates exercises focus on the “powerhouse” or the stabilizing muscles of the torso, which support the spine. For exercises performed either on a mat or apparatus, every movement in a Pilates workout emanates from the core, gently forcing practitioners to use both sides of the body symmetrically. Therefore both sides of the body have to participate equally which gives the dominant, overused muscles a rest and demands that the more under-used muscles work harder and so literally balance the body.
Yoga
The practice of Yoga is deeply rooted in ancient Indian culture and is intended to unite the mind, body and spirit through movement, breathing techniques and meditation.
Yoga’s exact origin and history is uncertain however, but we do know that it is thousands of years old. The earliest signs of yoga postures appeared as drawings on artefacts dating back to 3000 years B.C. Yoga was introduced to the Western World during the early 19th century where it began as a movement for health and vegetarianism and by the 1960’s there was an influx of Indian teachers who are responsible for the various styles we have available today.
