Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS)

Iliotibial Band Syndrome

Iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS or ITBFS, for Iliotibial Band Friction Syndrome) is one of the main causes of lateral knee pain in runners but also associated with cycling, hiking and weight lifting, especially squats. The iliotibial band is a superficial thickening of tissue on the outside of the knee, extending from the outside of the pelvis, over the hip and knee, and inserting just below the knee. The band is crucial to stabilising the knee during running, moving from behind the femur to the front while walking. The continual rubbing of the band over the lateral femoral epicondyle, combined with the repeated flexion and extension of the knee during running can cause the area to become inflamed.

Foam rollers are used by many people to help loosen the iliotibial band and can help in the prevention and treatment of pain to this area.
